If you have a car, driving from Salisbury to Stonehenge is straightforward ÔÇö but there are a few things about parking you need to know before you go.
The Route
From Salisbury city centre, the most direct route to Stonehenge is the A345 north through Amesbury, then the A303. The journey is approximately 9 miles and takes 20ÔÇô25 minutes in normal traffic. An alternative route via the A360 through Great Wishford is slightly longer but avoids town traffic.
Parking at Stonehenge
Stonehenge is managed by English Heritage. The Stonehenge car park is directly adjacent to the visitor centre and must be pre-booked online at english-heritage.org.uk. As of 2026, standard car parking costs ┬ú12ÔÇô┬ú18 per day. On peak days (school holidays, summer weekends) the car park fills quickly ÔÇö pre-booking is essential.
If you arrive without a pre-booked parking slot and the car park is full, you will be turned away. There is no alternative parking nearby. This is the most common cause of missed Stonehenge visits for drivers.
Alternative: Leave the Car in Salisbury
Many visitors find it far easier to park in Salisbury city centre (where parking is cheaper and more readily available) and take the Salisbury to Stonehenge Shuttle directly to Stonehenge.
