Photography at Stonehenge: Tips for Visitors from Salisbury

Stonehenge is arguably the most photographed prehistoric monument in the world. Getting a genuinely good shot requires thinking about timing, positioning and what the light is doing. Here's how to make the most of your photography visit from Salisbury.

Best Time for Photography

Early morning (the 10:05 shuttle from Salisbury) gives the best light in summer ÔÇö the sun rises to the south-east and illuminates the stones from the front. The crowd is also at its thinnest, making it easier to frame shots without other visitors. Late afternoon (14:05 or 15:05 shuttle) gives warm golden hour light in summer, but the crowd is heavier mid-afternoon before thinning in the final hour.

Shooting Positions

You walk the outer path around the monument clockwise. The classic front-on shot (looking north-west into the tallest trilithons) is available from the southernmost point of the path. For a broader context shot that shows the stones in the open Salisbury Plain landscape, photograph from the eastern side of the path looking west. The path brings you close enough for dramatic foreground detail without a telephoto lens.

Equipment

A smartphone is entirely sufficient ÔÇö the resolution of modern phone cameras handles the available light and fine stone texture well. A small telephoto lens (70ÔÇô200mm) lets you isolate individual stones dramatically from the path distance. A wide angle (24ÔÇô35mm) exaggerates the scale of the stones when you're close to the path.

Drones

Drone flights are not permitted over Stonehenge or the World Heritage Site buffer zone. Do not attempt to fly a drone here ÔÇö English Heritage and the National Trust (which owns the surrounding land) enforce this strictly.
