Book Everything in Advance
Summer is when both the Salisbury to Stonehenge Shuttle and Stonehenge entrance tickets sell out fastest. Book shuttle seats and English Heritage timed entry at the same time ÔÇö ideally weeks ahead. Shuttle departures fill from the front: 10:05 sells out first, working backwards through the day.
Go Early or Late
Midday in summer sees Stonehenge at its most crowded ÔÇö coach tours, families and organised groups all converge between 11:00 and 14:00. The 10:05 shuttle delivers you before the rush. Alternatively, the 14:05 or 15:05 departure gives you a quieter late afternoon, with extraordinary light in midsummer.
What to Wear
Sunscreen and a hat. Salisbury Plain has no shade. Even overcast summer days can be deceptively sunny at the monument. Bring water ÔÇö the caf├® at the visitor centre can have queues in peak hours.
Extended Summer Hours
In summer, Stonehenge opens as late as 20:00 (last entry 19:00). This gives visitors on the later shuttle departures ample time on site. The 15:05 from Salisbury arrives at Stonehenge by 15:40 ÔÇö leaving over 3 hours before close in peak summer. A sunset return on the shuttle is one of the finest ways to end a day in Wiltshire.
