Can You Walk from Salisbury to Stonehenge?

Yes, you can walk from Salisbury to Stonehenge ÔÇö but it will take considerably longer than most visitors expect.

The Walking Route

Stonehenge is approximately 10 miles (16 km) from Salisbury city centre. On foot, this takes between 2.5 and 3.5 hours depending on pace. The most direct route takes you north along the A345, passing through Amesbury before turning west on the A303 approach to Stonehenge. Significant stretches run along busy A roads without adequate footpaths ÔÇö it is not a recommended route for casual walkers.

A Better Walking Route via Woodhenge

A more pleasant option follows minor roads and tracks through the Woodhenge prehistoric site near Amesbury. This adds distance but provides a far safer and more interesting walk. It is still approximately 11ÔÇô12 miles from Salisbury and requires good footwear, OS map or GPS navigation, and appropriate clothing for exposed downland. Allow a full day and arrange return transport in advance.

Is It Worth Walking?

For serious walkers and long-distance hikers, the route through Wiltshire's downland is genuinely rewarding. For most tourists who want to spend their time at Stonehenge rather than getting there, the walk is impractical ÔÇö especially with luggage or on a day trip schedule.

The Practical Alternative

The Salisbury to Stonehenge Shuttle departs from directly opposite Salisbury Train Station six times daily. The 35-minute journey means you spend your time at Stonehenge, not on the road. At £20 return per person, it's a far more sensible use of your day.
