Visiting Stonehenge from Salisbury: A Perfect Day Trip

Salisbury is the closest major town to Stonehenge and makes a perfect base for a day trip. Whether you're visiting for an afternoon or making it the centrepiece of a longer Wiltshire break, here's how to structure your day.

Morning: Breakfast at Caboose

Start your morning at Caboose Salisbury, 115 South Western Road ÔÇö directly opposite the train station. The shuttle departs from here, so you're already in the right spot. Grab a coffee in advance (included in your shuttle price) and arrive 15 minutes before your departure.

The 10:05 departure is ideal for a full day at Stonehenge ÔÇö you'll arrive at around 10:40, before the main tourist rush.

Morning: Stonehenge (10:40ÔÇô13:00)

You'll need to pre-book your Stonehenge entrance at english-heritage.org.uk. Timed entry slots mean the site never feels overwhelming, and the earliest slots of the day are the quietest. Start at the visitor centre to take in the exhibitions (excellent context before you see the stones). Then take the short shuttle to the stone circle itself.

Allow at least 90 minutes at the monument to walk the full outer path, spend time near the stones, and return to the visitor centre comfortably.

Lunch: Stonehenge Caf├®

The Stonehenge Visitor Centre has a good caf├® serving hot food and light options. Expect it to be busy from 12:00 ÔÇö either eat early (pre-12:00) or bring a packed lunch.

Afternoon: More Time at Stonehenge or Return

Most visitors spend 2ÔÇô3 hours in total at Stonehenge. Take your reserved return pick-up at your pre-booked time from the car park. The shuttle will return you to Caboose by mid-afternoon.

Late Afternoon: Salisbury City

Spend the rest of your afternoon in Salisbury. The Cathedral Close ÔÇö home to the 13th-century Salisbury Cathedral ÔÇö is a 15-minute walk from the station. The medieval city centre has independent shops and good restaurants for an early dinner before your train home.
