Salisbury Cathedral and Stonehenge together represent one of the great UNESCO double-headers in England ÔÇö a medieval masterpiece and a prehistoric wonder, 9 miles apart, both reachable in a single day. Here's how to combine both visits efficiently.
The Cathedral First
Arrive in Salisbury early. Walk from the train station to the Cathedral Close (15 minutes). Salisbury Cathedral opens from 09:00 daily. Admission is by donation ÔÇö suggested ┬ú9 per adult. Allow at least 90 minutes inside: the Magna Carta display alone merits 20ÔÇô30 minutes, and the nave and tower tour (additional charge) is strongly recommended.
Then the Shuttle
Walk from the Cathedral Close back to the station area (15 minutes) and pick up the 12:05 or 13:05 Salisbury to Stonehenge Shuttle from Caboose. This gives you a full morning at the Cathedral and a solid 2ÔÇô3 hour afternoon at Stonehenge. The shuttle will return you to Caboose by late afternoon, in time to catch a train home or dinner in Salisbury.
In Reverse Order
Alternatively, go early to Stonehenge (10:05 shuttle) and spend the afternoon in the Cathedral. This is better suited to Stonehenge photographers (best morning light) and visitors arriving the night before with time to plan.
UNESCO Status
Stonehenge and Avebury (including Stonehenge's wider landscape) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Salisbury Cathedral Close is considered for inscription. The density of world-class heritage within a 10-mile radius of Salisbury is almost unrivalled in England ÔÇö and the Salisbury to Stonehenge Shuttle makes the Stonehenge portion effortless.
