How Early Should You Leave Salisbury for Stonehenge?

Choosing what time to leave Salisbury for Stonehenge is one of the most important decisions in planning your visit. Too early and you're rushing breakfast; too late and you'll share the monument with hundreds of other visitors. Here's a guide by goal.

If You Want the Quietest Experience

Take the 10:05 departure from Caboose. You'll arrive at Stonehenge at approximately 10:40 ÔÇö before the main tour bus crowds arrive. The first hour on site is the quietest. Book a 10:30 timed entry slot with English Heritage. This is the best strategy for photographers and those seeking a more contemplative visit.

If You Have a Half-Day

The 12:05 departure works well for those spending the morning in Salisbury first. You'll arrive at Stonehenge around 12:40 and can return on the 15:40 or 16:40 shuttle. This gives you just over 2 hours at the monument ÔÇö enough for a thorough visit.

If You're Arriving by Train from London

The 09:10 from London Waterloo arrives in Salisbury at approximately 10:35 ÔÇö too late for the 10:05 shuttle. The next express from Waterloo is the 08:40, arriving around 10:05 ÔÇö but this is cutting it fine for the first departure. We recommend checking Trainline or National Rail and booking the 11:05 shuttle to be safe, giving you a relaxed transfer.

In Winter

Stonehenge closes earlier in winter (typically by 17:00). The 10:05 departure is again recommended to maximise your time on site. The Salisbury to Stonehenge Shuttle runs reduced services in NovemberÔÇôMarch ÔÇö check the timetable before booking.
