The best route from Cambridge to Stonehenge runs via London. Take the train to London Kings Cross (fast service, 50 minutes), then make your way to Waterloo for the South Western Railway direct service to Salisbury (90 minutes). From Salisbury, the shuttle is a 2-minute walk from the station exit.

London Kings Cross to WaterlooTake the Underground (Victoria line to Victoria, then District/Circle to Embankment and walk, or Northern line to Waterloo direct). Allow 30 to 40 minutes including connections.

London Waterloo to SalisburySouth Western Railway direct service. Approximately every hour. Journey time 90 minutes. Also possible via GWR from Paddington to Westbury, changing for Salisbury.

Salisbury Station to CabooseTurn left from the exit. Caboose is directly opposite at 115 South Western Road — 2-minute walk across the zebra crossing.

Cambridge to Stonehenge: day trip or weekend break?

From Cambridge, Stonehenge is achievable as a long day trip — aim to leave Cambridge by 07:00 to reach Salisbury by 10:00 and catch the 10:05 or 11:05 shuttle. You can be at Stonehenge for a full morning visit and return to Cambridge by 20:00 via the same route.

A better option for many Cambridge visitors is a Wiltshire weekend break — one night in Salisbury or Bath, allowing a relaxed Stonehenge visit on day one and time in the city on day two. The contrast between Cambridge’s academic stone and Stonehenge’s prehistoric standing stones makes for a particularly satisfying trip.
